La démarche éthique peut se concevoir comme une confrontation de points de vue. Si les positions divergent chez les protagonistes d'une telle démarche, il devrait exister chez chacun une volonté de déboucher sur un accord qui vise, sinon toujours au bien, au moins au moindre mal, en particulier dans le contexte du soin. Philippe Svandra propose, à travers cet ouvrage, son point de vue, son regard philosophique sur l'objet particulier qu'est le soin. Il s'agit à la fois de dresser les contours de l'éthique soignante et de tenter de déterminer la nature et les fondements de l'activité de soin. Pour sa part, Philippe Svandra, au fil des différents textes de cet ouvrage, étudie les notions essentielles que sont l'autonomie, la sollicitude, la responsabilité, la liberté, la décision ou la temporalité, représentant autant de variations sur un thème qui reste fondamentalement identique : le soin. Il montre aussi les liens immémoriaux qui unissent le soin et la philosophie. Ce livre peut ainsi constituer une introduction à la réflexion éthique et philosophique pour un futur soignant ou un soignant en exercice. En réinterrogeant du dehors ce qu'il est difficile de discerner du dedans, le détour par la philosophie peut enrichir et approfondir la perspective sur le soin en plaçant les soignants dans une tension salutaire entre le concept et la réalité.
